Privacy

This page explains what happens to the details you give me through this site. It is short because there is very little to explain.

Who is responsible

This site is run by me, Chris Awoke. I decide what is done with the personal information described here, which makes me its data controller. You can reach me at chris.awoke@wikrena.com.

What I collect

  • What you type into the contact form: your name, your email address, what the message is about, and the message itself.
  • Your IP address, used only to limit how many messages one person can send in a short time. It is held in a counter that expires after ten minutes.
  • Ordinary server logs, kept by the hosting provider, which include your IP address and the pages requested.
  • When you open a piece on the Writing pages: which piece, when, a random number that tells one reader's visits apart from another's, the name of the site that sent you there (not the full address), your country and whether you are on a phone, tablet or computer. Not your IP address, and nothing that names you.
  • How far down a piece you read, recorded against the same random number.
  • What you search for on the Writing pages and how many results it found, with nothing that tells one searcher from another.

I collect nothing else. There are no accounts, no newsletter sign-up and no payments on this site. The newsletter the pieces go out in, The Brenxa Letter, is signed up to on Brenxa's site, under its own privacy policy.

Why I use it

To read your message and reply to it, to send you an automatic confirmation that it arrived, and to keep the form from being abused. The reading and search figures tell me which pieces are read, how far, and what people look for, so I know what to write. This site does not sell your information or use it for advertising, and nothing you send is added to a mailing list by it.

Who else handles it

Four services run the site. Each handles your information only to provide its service to me.

  • Vercel hosts the site.
  • Resend delivers the email that your message becomes.
  • Upstash holds the short-lived counter that limits how often the form can be used.
  • Supabase stores the pieces on the Writing pages and the reading and search figures described above.

The message is delivered to a mailbox with my email provider. These services may process information on servers outside Nigeria.

How long I keep it

A message stays in my inbox for as long as it takes to deal with it and any conversation that follows, and I delete it when you ask. The rate limit counter disappears after ten minutes. Server logs are kept by the hosting provider on its own schedule. Reading and search figures are kept as statistics; none of them can be tied to you by name, and the random number goes when you clear your cookies.

Cookies and tracking

Opening a piece on the Writing pages sets two cookies, both first-party and used for nothing but counting: brenxa_visitor holds the random number described above and lasts a year, and brenxa_visitor_seen remembers which pieces you opened in the last day, so a reload is not counted as a second reader. The rest of the site sets no cookies. There is no third-party analytics, advertising or tracking script anywhere on it, and its fonts are served from the site itself, so your visit is not reported to a font provider.

Other sites

The page links to other sites, including Wikrena, my social profiles and Paystack, where the book is bought. Each has its own privacy policy, and I do not control what they do.

Your rights

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you can ask what I hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, and object to how it is used. Email chris.awoke@wikrena.com and I will respond. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
